Introducing: Nova Supply Co.
We’ve all felt it to some degree at one point in our lives; it defines us, it breaks us, it strengthens us, and it shapes us. If you’ve followed me on Instagram (@rxaleman), you may have noticed a few things: 1) my outfits are weird, 2) my face is probably nonexistent, 3) I sometimes write poetry, and 4) damn, I am one hell of a sad, cynical, heartless, emotionally unstable mess of a person who's probably had the worst luck with love. What can I say? I'm multi-talented. Point is, love is incredibly complex, but as we've seen through brands such as gold., there are indeed ways of expressing something far more intricate than words can describe.
Thus, I would like to introduce you to Nova Supply.
If you've followed me since the beginning (and I mean, from my Wordpress days), you may have already known of the Brampton-based brand. Since its inception in 2012, Clayson Fletcher, Nova's founder and owner, has prided himself and Nova for their individually hand-crafted garments constructed using carefully curated fabrics sourced within Canada. In case you're skeptical of Nova Supply's transparency, feel free to follow both Nova (@novasupply)and Clayson (@claysonfletcher) on Instagram for real-time updates on what they're currently producing. In fact, they're so transparent with everything that I wouldn't be surprised if he shares his internet browsing history one day.
With a name that literally translates to "new supply," the brand's mission is clear: provide the public with something fresh and new, and much like your favourite drug dealer, Nova has the goods. Besides the careful attention given to the garments produced in (very) limited quantities, it's Nova's engaging attitude that brings to light the human nature behind the brand's name. For example, in March of 2016, Nova Supply released their lookbook for their then-upcoming collection "Self-Love 0.5" which was centred around the idea of loving oneself through personalized clothing. The overarching idea being implied is that once you finally accept yourself as the beautiful human being you are (you gorgeous person, you), you'll desire to look just as good and confident as you feel on the inside. In other words, Clayson is simply an infectiously positive person, and that's coming from your least favourite sad boi (it's the internet, leave me alone. I know that's not how you properly spell "boy").
If you're just as picky about clothing as I am, as cliche as it sounds, then perhaps you understand the struggle of finding clothes that you can feel and look good in. Well, if you've ever owned anything from Nova in your life, you'll know just how comfortable the fabrics used are, and more so, the feeling from putting something on knowing that it was specially crafted for you is one that I can only describe as, "holy shit." Given how eloquelnt I plhrased that review, I might as well become a professional critic, don't you think?
Nova Supply's latest endeavour comes in the form of a 2-part collection titled "Berry," named after Clayson's uncle, Barry (may he rest in peace). Besides being another addition to Nova's infamously long list of food-related clothing (i.e. A/W 2016 "Sunday's Desert"), this collection signals a positive growth in Nova's journey. As said by Clayson himself,
This collection is an embodiment of my uncle Barry, and the influence he had on my mother. To be real honest, I never really got to know him, but I knew how he was based on stories and memories my mother would share with me. I changed the logo and added a flower onto the back of it to show the growth and troubles I’ve endure over these few years, the flower used is called a Dahlia flower which is my mother name as well. I cut and sewn everything as always, just wanted to let you know and also remind myself in the future “where was my head at, at the moment.” I used all organic fibres to represent the natural and organic love I alway receive from my mother. The “Nova Shirt” which is my favourite was hand embroidery, and it took along time for me to choose the colours since there was so much options, but I came down to the Sky Blue, Tangerine Orange, Dark Pumpkin and Fall Oak Brown. That really represents my life, My mothers is the blue which means water/sky, the different variations of orange is my father, the earth, the dirt, the foundation. This collection is my first really, and I want to show what a young black man can do with his two hands and an idea..
Featuring a healthy variety of styles, "Berry: Phase One" consists of embroidered shirts (a first for the brand), oversized longsleeves, ponchos, linen pants, and, my personal favourite, a kimono. What more clothes would you need afterwards?
As you can see, the significance of this collection is strongly embedded within themes of family, natural growth, and perseverance. Each individual garment is carefully made, with notable details that include raw edges, dropped shoulders, rolled hems, alternating-colour embroidery, wide arm openings, and mock necks, all found of a variety of fabrics that range from linen as light as ancient papyrus, to organic cotton that feels like an angels wings wrapping you in hugs and kisses. Can you tell how much I love this collection? Subtlety isn't really my thing it seems.
Speaking more on his uncle,
Barry, man. Thats my uncle who I got to know through the love and support of my mother. I never knew you could love someone without really know or seeing them. Anyways, I’ve sewn all these piece like I always do, but this time, I had my mother and Barry in my thoughts this whole time, hopefully it shows from the different fabrics to even the coloured text and the hand embroidery used on the shirts. hopefully you enjoy, this is me being as honest and organic as I can to you.
Phase One is set to drop today, Tuesday February 28th, 2017 on Nova Supply's official website with Phase Two set to drop exactly one week from now on Tuesday March, 7th, 2017.
"Well, what's going to be included for Phase Two?"
I can't really tell you exactly what's going to be dropping, though I can definitely assure you that it will be just as incredible as Phase One. That said, I am allowed to not-so-subtly sneak this one picture in (God, I just realized how much of a snobby industry insider that makes me sound like):
If any of the above intrigues you (and they should because let's face it, the clothes look pretty awesome), you might want to do yourself a favour and follow Nova Supply on Instagram (@novasupply) and keep updated on Nova's website for any future collections... or you can continue to hang around here with me until I inform you of any updates. Oh, so now you'd much rather follow Nova on Instagram than stay with me? Fine. I don't need you (... but really, please stay).
Wow, it feel great to be back. I sincerely apologize for my lack of updates as of late, it's just been one hell of a ride for me as of late, and I find myself so lost in the world now that it's far too easy to lose track of the time I should spend focused on myself. That said, I hope to put out more content as a means of balancing the chaos that is my life and building myself up as more than just "that guy on the internet." I'll also be working harder on putting out content for Fashion Moves Forward, Streetwear Plug, and now BRENMI, so feel free to follow these publications as well, it would mean the world to me. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me thus far, and I will do everything I can to not let not only myself, but all of you, down.
As Nova Supply always closes off their announcements,
Love, Peace, and Blessings.
